After news broke that Mariah Carey had once accepted money to perform for the Gadhafi family who is now under scrutiny by the world for their acts of genocide, she wanted to clear the air. She received $1million from Moammar Gadhafi for performing at a New Year’s party in St. Barts in 2009. She released a statement earlier today:
I was naïve and unaware of who I was booked to perform for. I feel horrible and embarrassed to have participated in this mess. Going forward, this is a lesson for all artist to learn from. We need to be more aware and take more responsibility regardless of who books our shows. Ultimately we as artists are to b held accountable.
The 41-year-old singer who is currently expecting twins with her husband Nick Cannon, also said that after she gives birth to her children, she will record a new song entitled “Save The Day” with all of the proceeds going to human rights charities.
But Carey isn’t the only one wrapped up in all this mess, both Nelly Furtado and Beyoncé - who was also at the 2009 party in St. Barts - have been paid $1million each by the Gadhafi family for performances within the past 5 years. Since the threat in Libya has grown even more hostile, both Furtado and Beyoncé have donated $1million to their a respected charity. Other celebrities who have yet not announced their donation - if one was even made at all - include Usher, Lionel Richie, Jay-Z, Lindsay Lohan, media mogul Russel Simmons, and Victoria’s Secret angel Miranda Kerr.
