the “u” isn’t content with .500

Miami University may be one of the country’s “halo” teams when it comes to college football, but that doesn’t mean they’re good every single year. It happens to all of the haloed teams - Notre Dame, USC, Alabama, Texas, what have you - but sometimes even a 7-5 season just isn’t enough. Randy Shannon, head coach of the Miami Hurricanes since 2007 was fired late last night after athletic director for the “U,’ Kirby Hocutt announced that Miami would “seek new leadership for [their] football program.” Having joined the Hurricanes for the 2007 season, Shannon took a decent football team and helped them to a 28-22 record since his arrival, including a 16-16 record for conference play within the ACC. Not once did Shannon bring his Hurricanes to a conference title game in his four years of service. Having been a title favorite during preseason talks and a big Thursday-night win early this season over a Pittsburgh team ranked at 15 in preseason estimates, the Hurricanes still lost to a mediocre Big East opponent South Florida yesterday with less than 40% of home seats filled. Granted South Florida was not considered an opponent that would need a tremendous amount of support, but nevertheless Miami lost 23-20. While Shannon has been fired, the fate of the rest of the coaching staff including Shannon’s staff of weight and training room advisors is still up in the air.
