As though we didn’t already think of him as the world’s most egotistical and self-centered human being on earth, he goes ahead and does this. We all know the story. LeBron James made a formal announcement that he would be moving from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Miami Heat in the form of a one-hour special on ESPN that came with it’s own title: “The Decision.” The special didn’t go over well with the press nor with its nearly 10 million viewers. Many people who watched the special deemed it to be the personification of his egocentric attitude. James and CEO of his management compnay, LRMR - Maverick Carter - were recently interviewed with Soledad O’Brien on CNN about “The Decision.” In the interview James was asked if he thought that his race had anything to do with the ridicule from his formal announcement, which quietly raised $3million for the Boys & Girls Club of America James’ response:
“I think so at times. It’s always, you know, a race factor. […] For me to have an opportunity to give back to the Boys & Girls Club of America, that I would never change that. And if I have to take heat to give back to kids, I would do it the same way every single time.”
His manager, Carter, added:
“It definitely played a role in some of the stuff coming out of the media, things like that were written for sure. […] LeBron was using a significant moment in time to benefit young people. And a lot of people can take those opportunities and make it about them. He really was - his goal was to make it about kids and about giving opportunities for kids.”
Carter has a point with the whole celebrities giving back often want to make it about them (Bono’s ONE campaign requires more than half the money donated to go to campaign workers’ salaries, for instance). But beyond that, I don’t remember once hearing the Boys & Girls Club being mentioned during “The Decision.” So if there was a donation, it was made so that these statements could be made, not because he was doing it for the kids. There’s no denying that LeBron James could have the world’s biggest ego - surpassing that of even Kanye West. With a self-applied nickname of King James, signing a contract with Nike producing his own shoe before he even made his NBA debut, all formed the James we know today. And today’s James, is one who admittedly leaves the Cleveland Cavaliers for the Miami Heat so he has a better chance of winning:
“Like I said before, I feel like [the Miami Heat are] going to give me the best opportunity to win and to win for multiple years, and not only just to win in the regular season or just to win five games in a row or three games in a row, I want to be able to win championships. And I feel like I can compete down there.”
There you have it folks. The world’s most egotistical and self-centered man thinks people hate him because he’s black and not because he’s an ass, which basically makes him even more of an ass.
