Newark, New Jersey is heralded as the 22nd most crime-ridden city in the nation, and it’s education system doesn’t help that fact. Way back in 1995, the state of New Jersey seized control over the city’s education system after it had failed. The state replaced all school board members. This reign could possibly be coming to an end. Today, CEO and co-founder of the world’s leading social-networking website, Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg has agreed to donate $100 million to the public school system of the city of Newark, New Jersey. Along with the $100 million, governor of New Jersey Chris Christie has agreed to give at least some of the state’s control back to Mayor Corey A. Booker. The three formally announced the plan on today’s Oprah Winfrey Show. Even despite the state-run public school system, the Newark school system remains one of the lowest-scoring systems in the state of New Jersey. Oprah Winfrey has been one of Mayor Booker’s greatest campaign supporters and is a major donor to the Newark metropolitan area. While there is no current plan of action for where exactly the money will be spent or how it will be spent, we can hope that through Mayor Booker’s controlling interest in the public school system in addition to Zuckerberg and Oprah’s donations the schools will vastly improve test scores and graduation rates.
